Prime Minister Welcomes New WFP Executive Director, Calls for Urgent Coordination on Humanitarian Catastrophe

Prime Minister Mohamed Hassan Al-Taishi congratulated Luke J. Lindberg on his appointment as head of the UN World Food Programme and called for direct coordination with the Peace Government to speed aid to vulnerable groups, as Sudan faces food insecurity, water scarcity, mass displacement and collapsing services.

Mr. Mohamed Hassan Othman Al-Taayshi, Prime Minister of the Transitional Peace Government, sent an official congratulatory message to Mr. Luke J. Lindberg on his appointment as Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).

The government emphasized in its message that Mr. Lindberg assumes this responsibility at a critical juncture for Sudan, amidst a severe escalation in food insecurity, water scarcity, mass displacement, and the collapse of basic services threatening the lives of millions of civilians. This presents a prominent opportunity to strengthen humanitarian interventions and halt the deterioration of conditions.

The Prime Minister noted that the Peace Government had previously warned repeatedly in its communications with UN agencies of these escalating risks, urging the importance of pairing emergency relief efforts with proactive preventive steps to prevent food and water crises from escalating into a broader humanitarian catastrophe.

In the same context, the Prime Minister commended the constructive cooperation between the government and former leadership of the World Food Programme, represented by former Executive Director Cindy McCain and Acting Executive Director Carl Skau, affirming the government's firm commitment to continuing this partnership by facilitating humanitarian access and relief operations in all areas under its administration in accordance with humanitarian principles and absolute transparency.

The Prime Minister concluded his message by inviting the WFP office to engage in direct coordination with the Peace Government to establish effective operational mechanisms ensuring the swift delivery of aid to vulnerable groups without discrimination or political considerations, expressing his aspiration for an early meeting with the new leadership to translate joint commitments into tangible field actions.
